Cutting Edge Solutions for Sustainable Development of Cement and Concrete

This GRS focuses on bringing together young researchers to discuss cutting edge solutions to develop sustainable concrete for all. Cement and concrete play a fundamental role in creating infrastructure development throughout the world. With several new cementitious materials developed as ‘low carbon cement solution’ recently, this GRS will attempt to address some of the missing links in the existing cement and new cements for a sustainable future. Global projections suggest that cement consumption is expected to grow mainly in the developing economies in the next few decades. It is necessary to focus on a technological solution feasible for adoption on a large scale without changing the capital requirements for adoption in these regions. Developing alternatives for cementitious materials from widely available resources is crucial for sustainability. Integrating waste materials into the materials flow cycle in cementitious materials is of utmost importance for a sustainable future, which will also be a key focus of discussion in the seminar.

The 2022 GRS seeks to create a path to achieving this ambitious goal with the contributions of early-career researchers and industry professionals working in cement and concrete. It will bring researchers together to discuss novel cementitious materials, durability and service life of existing infrastructure, sustainable solutions for developing countries, carbon management in infrastructure materials and systems, circular economy and best practices for end-of-life management.

Attending this GRS will be a good opportunity for young researchers to share ideas about the future of concrete on the thematic area identified and is followed by the associated GRC (for which applications are strongly encouraged).
