Keynote Session: Dysregulation of Antimicrobial Peptides in Chronic Inflammatory Lung Disease
Pieter S. Hiemstra is professor in Respiratory Cell Biology and Immunology, and heads the Laboratory for Respiratory Cell Biology and Immunology of the Department of Pulmonology at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). His research on antimicrobial peptides and proteins includes regulation of their expression as well as characterization of their functions in the context of (chronic) lung disease.

Mentorship Component: Opportunities and Challenges in Academic Science
Julia Dorin is professor at the University of Edinburgh and holds a chair in Genetics and Host Defence. Her research on the in vitro and in vivo functions of beta-defensins touches many topics, including the role of these defensins in the protection against infections, immune modulation and fertility. In this mentorship session, she will draw from her extensive experience to address the opportunities and challenges for young scientists within academic science.
