Systems-Interaction in Atherosclerosis

Several decades of successful reductionist research led to substantial inroads in understanding the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. This work established for instance time-tested and new treatment options such as statins and PCSK9 inhibitors. At the 2017 Gordon Atherosclerosis conference, we propose to discuss how connection of traditionally isolated research fields related to atherosclerosis may instill capabilities to design conceptually new treatment strategies. Recent advances, for instance uncovering interactions of metabolism and microbiota with systemic inflammation, highlight that building the "atherosclerosis connectome" has already begun. We propose to discuss, among others, the following questions: How do microRNA, other novel non-coding RNAs and altered gene expression patterns influence cellular action, metabolism and immunity? Can we retrain immunity towards inflammation resolution? How are the hematopoietic and central nervous system affected in atherosclerosis? Where do stromal and immune cells originate, and how do they interact in disease progression? Can imaging provide dynamic "biopsies" in out-of-reach tissues? How do myocardial and vascular health interact? We will strive to make this conference a catalyst for entering new research fields, providing the traditionally communicative environment that has fostered atherosclerosis research since the first Gordon Atherosclerosis conference happened in 1973.
