Conference Description

This Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) seeks to highlight the bioinorganic chemistry being investigated by young scientists (graduate students and postdocs) today and identify the emerging inorganic biochemistry topics of tomorrow. Presentations will span all facets of basic and applied science as related to bioinorganic chemistry. This includes spectroscopic and structural characterization of biological and biomimetic metal centers, the elucidation of enzyme mechanisms, and the emerging role of synthetic biology in the field. Contributions from several other broad disciplines such as renewable energy, agriculture, the environment and medicine will also be made.

The Bioinorganic Chemistry GRS was initially developed in 1996 to provide an alternative to its parent Gordon Research Conference, Metals in Biology, which is consistently oversubscribed, preventing extensive student involvement. Furthermore, this GRS strives to provide attendees with career development opportunities. In support of this goal, all talks will be selected from abstracts and participants are highly encouraged to present posters, which provides valuable experience in networking and scientific communication. Programming will also include sessions that address career development, in which mentors will provide key insights and advice. Additionally, the GRS overlaps with the GRC for one evening, allowing students to interact with leaders in the bioinorganic chemistry field.

This GRS was oversubscribed last year and we expect enthusiasm for this meeting to continue. We encourage prospective participants to apply early and it should be noted that preference for acceptance into the meeting will be given to those submitting poster/talk abstracts. To be considered for a talk, please submit your abstract by October 3, 2014. Support up to the costs of registration will be provided to speakers, contingent on fundraising efforts.

All scientists at career stages similar to that of a graduate student or post-doc are invited to join.

This GRS will be held in conjunction with the "Metals in Biology" Gordon Research Conference (GRC). Those interested in attending both meetings must submit an application for the GRC in addition to an application for the GRS. Refer to the associated GRC program page for more information.
