Genetics, Niche Development, Transdifferentiation and Reproductive Diseases

Germinal stem cells are critical in reproductive biology and survival of a species, the conduit for transferring the genetic material from one generation to the next, and the eye of the needle through which all life must pass. The differentiation of the embryonic gonads into either testes or ovaries determines the male and female fate of the germ cells to make sperm or oocytes, respectively, a journey that involves distinct and significantly different germ cell maintenance, renewal and terminal differentiation pathways. Abnormalities in germ cell migration, proliferation, pluripotency and function result in reproductive diseases including infertility, endocrine disruption, and tumorigenesis. The conference will assemble leading international scientists at the forefront of the field to present up-to-date findings, and stimulate discussion and exchange of ideas among the participants. Special topics of discussion include the roles of Y chromosome in sex determination and germ cell niche development, spermatogonial cell differentiation, the status of adult female germinal stem cells, transdifferentiation between somatic and germ cells, origin of germ cell tumors, and application of genetic manipulation strategies in reproductive biology. The conference will provide opportunity for poster presentation by participants, and some abstracts will be selected for oral presentations. The informal setting of the Gordon Research Conference will provide ample opportunities for consolidating the current status of the field, shaping the course of future research, and establishing cross-disciplinary collaborations. The conference site is located on the beautiful campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with various recreational activities, including hiking, biking, shopping and cultural sites in the neighborhood. Hong Kong is the entry point to all parts of Asia, and is an excellent starting point for post-conference tours.
