The past few years have seen a tremendous growth in interest and activity in membrane science and technology due to critical societal needs in the areas of bioprocessing, energy, and the environment. The significance of membrane and materials development is evident through various active research projects including the development of membrane separation processes for the purification of recombinant DNA derived antibodies, membrane electrodes for fuel cells, membrane separation processes for purification of ethanol produced from cellulosic biomass, and membrane systems for carbon dioxide removal and sequestration. The Gordon Research Seminar in 2008 will be an excellent opportunity for young researchers in the field of membrane science to gather together, share information and, most importantly, learn from one another via both formal seminar discussions and informal networking opportunities. Through the intimate contact uniquely afforded by the Gordon Research Conference between graduate students and highly regarded professionals in the membrane research field, the next generation of membrane scientists will gain invaluable feedback and support for their future scientific endeavors.
