From Single Molecules to Microbial Ecosystem Functioning

The Gordon Research Seminar on Molecular Basis of Microbial One-Carbon Metabolism is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas.

The central topic of this GRS are microbiological processes that are involved in the aerobic or anaerobic generation and consumption of one-carbon compounds such as methanol, methylamines and methyl sulfides, and the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane. The biological complexity of these processes requires an interdisciplinary exchange between researchers from different fields. Thus, we expect to bring together young scientists from different backgrounds that range from enzyme biochemistry and structural biology to genetics and genomics, ecology and geochemistry, as well as systems biology and synthetic biology.

The 2014 GRS provides a unique opportunity for young researchers to present their latest results on the metabolism of one-carbon compounds. At the same time, this forum serves as an introduction to the topics of the ensuing Gordon Research Conference in a collegial and highly interactive atmosphere. "From single molecules to microbial ecosystem functioning", we hope to foster the foundations of a scientific network among the next generation to address emerging questions in this relevant field of research.
