Conference Description
The Physical Metallurgy GRS provides a unique forum for young doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to present their work, discuss new methods, cutting edge ideas, and pre-published data, as well as to build collaborative relationships with their peers. Experienced mentors and trainee moderators will facilitate active participation in scientific discussion to allow all attendees to be engaged participants rather than spectators.
Processing-structure-property relationships are at the center of the materials science of physical metallurgy, and understanding the formation and control of materials structure has been accelerated by improvements in experimentation, modeling, and simulation. Recent advances in characterization tools allow for detailed views of new materials with unique structure and insight into the effects of processing. Development of in-situ capabilities enable deeper understanding of structure evolution under stimuli such as heating, stress, or corrosive environments. Furthermore, the design of metallic structures across length scales has been greatly aided by growing capabilities in computational materials science, availability of big data, and machine learning techniques. These combined advances have resulted in greater scientific understanding in tailoring materials structure for enhanced and novel performance, which will be discussed in this meeting.
