The Salmonella Biology and Pathogenesis GRS provides a unique forum for young doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to present their work, discuss new methods, cutting edge ideas, and pre-published data, as well as to build collaborative relationships with their peers. Experienced mentors and trainee moderators will facilitate active participation in scientific discussion to allow all attendees to be engaged participants rather than spectators.
Following the great success of the initial Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on "The Impact of Microbial and Host Factors on Salmonella Biology" in 2023, we have the great pleasure to announce the continuation of this unique format that enables early-career researchers to present their research, discuss with peers, and build collaborations. Our goal is to provide junior investigators a safe, collaborative, international, and vibrant environment to foster the exchange of ideas.
We therefore chose diversity as a unifying theme for this seminar: showcasing the immense diversity of Salmonella research conducted to date, spanning clinical and fundamental research, various techniques and model systems, and biological scales of the research questions, which range from molecules to ecosystems. We are furthermore committed to enabling the highest possible degree of diversity and inclusion within the GRS participants: We strive to enable researchers from all over the globe to attend and present their research, provide support to those in precarious situations and actively promote gender equality, as well as increased representation of historically marginalized communities and individuals.
During the GRS, we will select oral presentations from the submitted abstracts and allow all participants to present their work in form of a scientific poster. Furthermore, we will host a panel discussion, centering around the topic of diversity and diverse backgrounds, where we invite reknowned researchers to share their scientific and personal journey, also highlighting detours and struggles that they had to overcome. Overall, our goal is to enable the exchange among young scientists who are the faces of the future of Salmonella research, teaching, entrepreneurship or policy making - in brief, tomorrows leaders.
Application Instructions
The seminar will feature approximately 10 talks and 2 poster sessions. All attendees are expected to actively participate in the GRS, either by giving an oral presentation or presenting a poster. Therefore, all applications must include an abstract.
The seminar chair will select speakers from abstracts submitted by April 27, 2025. Those applicants who are not chosen for talks and those who apply after the deadline to be considered for an oral presentation will be expected to present a poster. In order to participate, you must submit an application by the date indicated in the Application Information section above.
Program Format
Gordon Research Seminars are 2-day meetings which take place on the Saturday and Sunday just prior to the start of the associated GRC. The GRS opens with a 1-hour introductory session on Saturday afternoon, followed by a poster session, dinner and a 2-hour session in the evening. Sunday morning begins with breakfast and is followed by another 2-hour session, a second poster session, and lunch. A final 1-hour session takes place just after lunch, and the associated GRC begins later that evening.
