Redox Biology in Diseases of Aging: Fundamental Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential

The Gordon Research Seminar on Thiol-Based Redox Regulation and Signaling is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas.

This Gordon Seminar will focus on redox modification of protein thiols and the role they play in a broad range of cellular processes. Because altered thiol-based signaling is central to aging and aging-associated diseases, and modified redox homeostasis defines age-related dysfunction, there will be a particular focus on mechanisms that underlie this relationship.In particular, emphasis will be on the role of thiol-based redox regulation in cancer, inflammation, metabolic disorders, and in the context of environmental stress. Discussion topics will range from the chemical basis for reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species and thiol-based interactions, to the study of how redox modifications integrate into cellular signaling and physiology, as well as on the development of novel tools to study thiol modifications and thiol-dependent processes.
