Understanding Fundamental Dynamics and Manipulating Time-Dependent Properties in Complex Nonequilibrium Matter

This research conference provides a forum for discussion of nonequilibrium dynamics in condensed matter systems exhibiting collective or cooperative phenomena. The main subjects are time-dependent properties of excitations, electronic phase transitions, spin dynamics and exotic magnetic phenomena, structural phase transitions, and ultrafast processes in nanoscale structures or systems with reduced dimensionality. Discussions include a broad range of material systems which share common underlying physics, and dynamics characterized by coupled degrees of freedom.

Modern ultrafast spectroscopy and scattering methods are powerful tools to reveal material dynamics and couplings at the fundamental timescales of electronic and atomic motion. They further provide means for dynamic control of material properties through coherent field interaction, charge/spin excitation, transient pressure, atomic strain and displacement. Intense femtosecond pulses are now readily available across the THz, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, and X-ray regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, enabling advanced time-resolved investigations. Ultrafast electron diffraction and photoelectron emission provide information complementary to electromagnetic probes.

Typical topics include: Ultrafast quasi-particle dynamics in superconductors, colossal magneto-resistance materials, low-dimensional charge and spin density wave compounds, insulators, Kondo systems and heavy fermion compounds; time-domain studies of structural, electronic, and magnetic degrees of freedom and their corresponding excitations and interactions; optically induced magnetic, ferroelectric and multiferroic, metal-insulator, and solid-liquid phase transitions; ultrafast magnetic and electronic switching phenomena; correlation effects in excitonic systems; ultrafast few-particle and collective effects in solid-state nanosystems; ultrafast dynamics in novel quantum materials such as graphene or topological insulators; optical control over near and far-from-equilibrium dynamics.
