Corrosion Under Control? From Mechanisms to Sustainable Applications

The motivation for research in the field of corrosion science and engineering is to enable safe, durable and sustainable application of metallic materials in various fields. A solid understanding of corrosion mechanisms and targeted protection methods will reduce risks to society from corrosion, such as a possible corrosion-related failure of a bridge or an airplane, as well as considerably reduce costs by unnecessary degradation or pre-mature failure of engineering structures. Research on materials interactions with the environment is motivated by the development of novel materials as well as by the application of "classic" materials in novel applications. In the first case, a safe application of these novel materials requires understanding of the critical material and environment factors on possible corrosion modes. New application fields for classic materials can bring about new challenges for the material property profile, including the corrosion behavior. A general aim in corrosion research is to extract key strategies to suppress failure by measures already at the level of the mechanistic cause. To elucidate fundamental mechanisms and to extract key factors of corrosion reactions, application of a range of sophisticated techniques and approaches are required, both in experiment and in modeling.

The 2016 Aqueous Corrosion GRC will contain talks from international leading researchers in the fields of passivity and oxide films, localized corrosion mechanisms, advanced techniques to the study of corrosion processes, corrosion protection by smart coatings and inhibitors, corrosion of metallic biomaterials, as well as corrosion and protection in engineering applications. The GRC targets discussion between academic, government and industrial researchers. The conference will have presentations in the traditional GRC format (i.e. 40 minute talk plus 20 minute discussion). Informal discussions and poster sessions in the evenings will complement these interactions.
